les grands palais romains

in French – First edition 2012- Reprint 2014

This book focuses on a specific period in the history of the city, that of the Papal aristocracy and the handful of powerful families who competed for St Peter’s throne between the Renaissance and the Baroque Era. They used art and architecture to display their wealth and power, commissioning the greatest artists and architects of the times to build somptuous palaces, today the remaining witnesses of a lost era.

fontaines baroques de rome

This is the second book in the series of Carnets d’Italie, which focuses on the fountains of Rome. Rome is the city of water. Where it is becoming a rarity in many parts of the world, in Rome it continues to flow abundantly to end in its spectacular fountains, celebrated in the world for their unique aesthetics. However, beyond their artistic qualities, the fountains are linked together through a sophisticated system of underground aqueducts and pipes which constantly feed the city with the best water. They were designed by Ancient Roman engineers and still work to this day.
